3 Tips for a Healthier Fourth of July

Friday, July 3, 2015

Happy 4th of July, “Y'all”! If you're planning on cooking this holiday, here are a couple of tips to keep you eating a tasty but healthy meal!

  1. When buying bbq sauce or ketchup, make sure you READ the ingredients! If you find High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), choose another one! HFCS is in most generic sauces, so keep an eye out. Why? You might ask... HFCS is an industrial food product and FAR from natural; therefore, your body does not digest it the same. It instead absorbs much more quickly into your bloodstream going straight to your liver causing ALL SORTS of problems! Fuel your body well.
  2. Think colorful! It's easy to plan a bbq dinner with food items that are mostly brown. Making sure that you have a variety of colors in your menu will be a sure way to bring great nutrition. (ie... Beef or Chicken Shish kabobs with onion, bell peppers and zucchini; corn on the cob; roasted potatoes; side salad)
  3. Look for healthy desserts online. My favorite websites to browse are... Chocolate Covered Katie - The Healthy Dessert Blog , urbanposer.blogspot.com , and Cooking Light | Find Healthy Recipes, Nutrition Tips.
